This work has traditionally been done by government agencies. Here in the United States it takes the form of the Environmental Protection Agency. However, the private sector is embracing environmental research quickly and there are rapidly growing opportunities in this area. Today a business needs to know what their impact on the environment is. This impact can be translated into costs that are associated with polluting the environment. In years past this cost would come in the form of fines from the government, but today it is just as likely to come in the form of a decrease in sales due to consumer concerns for the environment. People are now more savvy with their money and understand that what they buy will have an influence on whether the ecology of the world is made better or worse. Through environmental research, a corporation will know what their impact on the environment is and be able to calculate how this will affect their operation.

There will also be plenty of environmental research jobs in the area of conservation of resources. The first step in protecting natural resources is to not waste them in the first place. This area of environmental research is already operating in a large capacity because it has an effect on the bottom line for a business. If you can conserve energy, while not operating at a lower capacity, that reduces energy costs and increases profits. This is an equation every business understands. It is CO2 that is creating global warming and if we cannot get this problem under control, the rest of the pollution to our environment will not matter much. Environmental research is focused on generating energy that is clean and renewable. Clean in the sense that carbon emissions are very low or non-existent and renewable in the sense that it will not be used up, but is a part of the ecosystem of the planet.

Solar and wind energy are great examples of clean and renewable resources to generate energy. In the short term there are now and will be in the near future environmental research jobs relating to curbing the carbon emissions of fossil fuels. Hybrid cars are a good example of this.
