The future of environmental technology jobs is going to be robust, and anyone thinking about a career choice needs to take a long look at this field. The biggest area of employment for environmental technology is going to be with energy. There are two factors that exist in the world now that must be solved. One is the use of fossil fuels and the other is the growing demand for energy. On one hand, the planet continues to burn oil for its energy and this is creating a massive amount of carbon dioxide that was not present in the environment in the past. The addition of this CO2 is creating many environmental problems, not the least of which is that of global warming. Add to this a growing demand for energy from a growing populations, and third world countries becoming industrialized, and the planet now has a recipe for disaster.

Few people seeking environmental technology jobs in the future will be unemployed. There are a great many areas of technology that are underdeveloped. These alternative energy sources must be developed in such a way that they can be used economically and used in an environmentally safe way. This includes the production of the energy as well as its distribution and use. There are a great many examples of alternative energy that people are not aware of, but are getting a lot of attention by engineers working with technology in an attempt to create a practical way to use the alternative energy.

Some of these alternative energy sources are known by most people and job growth can already be seen. In the area of wind and solar power environmental technology jobs have arrived and will only become more abundant in the future. The push to improve the wattage and size of solar panels, as well as the cost continues.

The area of biofuels has only started to be explored. Fuels for cars using ethanol from corn is well known in the United States, but the use of sugar cane in Brazil has been more successful as a biofuel technology. These fuels are based upon sugar fermentation to produce a type of alcohol, but there are other sources of fuel that are just now be explored as well. Fuel made from plants that are not food sources are becoming more attractive. Using a food crop as the source of a biofuel helps the environment but also put upward pressure on food prices and creates hunger among the poor. Countries around the world are beginning to pass laws encouraging the production and use of various biofuels. This will lead to an increase in environmental technology jobs.

Most of the environmental technology jobs are in an area of work that attempts to take existing technology and apply it to existing knowledge. There continues to be research into to areas of alternative energy and there is a constant development in technology, but the combination of what is already known and the ability to apply it to our existing technology is a wide open field with enormous opportunities.
